Mother’s Day History
Originally, Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it was known, was a tradition that allowed children working away from home to return to their ‘mother’ church and visit their mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This provided a chance to reconnect with both their spiritual and family roots. Because the dates of Lent change annually, the date of Mothering Sunday also varies.
Mother’s Day Eating

Did you know that Simnel cake – a fruit cake with a layer of almond paste on the top and in the middle – is the traditional mother’s day cake? Today, the cake is more associated with Easter. This means that not only can you have an Easter Sunday roast, you can also have cake for breakfast! The baby Jesus said so.
You can find a recipe for Simnel cake here on the BBC Food website. Or, you could go to any one of these bakeries in North Berwick and beyond and treat yourself to whatever cake you want for Mother’s Day!
Bostock Bakery

Forget Simnel cake this Mother’s Day and treat yourself to a signature Bostock from the renowned Bostock Bakery a two minute walk from Harbour Haven’s front door. A Bostock is a traditional French pastry made with Brioche, almond cream and nuts. It’s crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. It’s been nicknamed [by me] as the North Berwick crowd-pleaser. Another great reason to celebrate Mother’s Day at Harbour Haven.
Goose on the Green

Fancy getting up and out into the fresh air? Jump in the car and head to Gullane. On the high street, Goose on the Green is a small independent café that serves delicious teas, coffees, cakes and food. Their breakfast is great. The team work in partnership with local suppliers to source the finest ingredients for their delicious food. The menu changes, but no matter what’s on offer, there’s nothing better than getting a coffee and pastry and taking a stroll on Gullan’s spectacular beach.
Dunbar Community Bakery

Instead of going west, jump in the car and head east to Dunbar. Community spirit is a powerful force in Dunbar and thanks to the energy, commitment and generosity of the town’s people the Dunbar Community Bakery opened for trade in October 2011. There isn’t a thing in the bakery that isn’t tasty! Okay, they may not do Simnel cake, but their sausage rolls have built quite a following.
